How to cancel subscriptions

Quick answer
Cancel with whoever bills you. If Apple bills you, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. If Google Play bills you, open your subscriptions in Google Play. Otherwise, cancel in the service's own account settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
Step 1: find out who bills you
The same subscription can be billed by different companies, and each one is cancelled in a different place. Your receipt or card statement tells you which.
| What your receipt or statement shows | Who bills you | Where to cancel |
|---|---|---|
| A receipt from Apple | Apple (App Store) | On iPhone, iPad or Mac |
| A receipt from Google Play | Google Play | In Google Play |
| A PayPal automatic payment | The business, through PayPal | In PayPal |
| An Amazon charge | Amazon | On Amazon |
| A line on your phone or internet bill | Your phone or internet company | Their app or website |
| The service's own name | The service directly | In the service's account settings |

Cancel on iPhone, iPad or Mac
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap the subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. If there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiry message in red, it is already cancelled.
On a Mac: open the App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, click your name again, then Subscriptions, choose the subscription and click Cancel Subscription.
On a Windows PC: in the Apple Music or Apple TV app, click your name, choose View My Account, then Manage next to Subscriptions, Edit, then Cancel Subscription.
Apple's page adds: cancel a free trial at least 24 hours before it ends, and only the family member who started a subscription can cancel it.
Cancel in Google Play
On an Android phone:
- Open your subscriptions in Google Play.
- Select the subscription.
- Tap Cancel subscription.
- Follow the instructions.
On a computer:
- Go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.
- Find the subscription and click Manage.
- Click Cancel subscription, choose a reason and click Continue.
Google's page adds that uninstalling an app doesn't cancel its subscription, and that you keep the time you paid for: a yearly plan cancelled on 1 July stays active until 31 December.
Cancel a PayPal automatic payment
- On the PayPal website, go to Settings.
- Click Payments.
- Select Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments.
- Select the business. From its page you can cancel the automatic payment.
Cancel on Amazon
Most Amazon subscriptions: go to Your Memberships and Subscriptions, find the subscription, select Manage Subscription, then Cancel Subscription under Advanced Controls. Some digital subscriptions have an Auto-Renew switch instead.
Amazon Prime: go to Cancel Your Prime Membership and follow the prompts. Amazon says paid members who haven't used their benefits get a full refund of the current period. Prime Video add-ons, such as Paramount+, carry on after Prime ends; cancel them separately. If you joined Prime through Google Play, cancel with Google.
Cancel directly with the service
Netflix
- Go to Manage your membership and sign in if asked.

- Tap or click Finish Cancellation.
You can watch until the end of the billing period. If there's no Cancel option, a partner bills you: the Membership section of your Account page shows how to cancel with them.
Spotify
- Go to Manage your plan (spotify.com/account/subscription/manage).
- Select Cancel subscription.
Premium stays until your next billing date, then the account switches to free. If a phone or internet company bills you, find their contact under Payment on your account page.
YouTube Premium
On a computer: go to youtube.com/paid_memberships, select Manage membership, Deactivate, Continue to cancel, pick a reason, then Yes, cancel.
On Android: tap your profile picture, Paid memberships, the membership, Continue to cancel, a reason, then Yes, cancel.

Audible
- Select your name at the top of the page.
- Select Membership details.
- Select Cancel membership, then Confirm cancellation.
Use your credits first: unused credits are lost when the membership ends. Titles you bought are yours to keep.
After you cancel
- You usually keep access until the period ends. Google Play, Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, Disney+, ChatGPT and Adobe all say so.
- Refunds depend on the company. Amazon refunds an unused Prime period, Adobe most plans within 14 days, and Google Play "in some instances". Netflix and Spotify's cancel pages don't mention refunds.
- Keep the confirmation. The US Federal Trade Commission advises keeping a copy of your cancellation. If charges continue after you asked to stop, dispute them with your card issuer.

FAQ
Does deleting an app cancel the subscription?
No. Google Play and Netflix both say that uninstalling or deleting the app doesn't cancel. Cancel with whoever bills you.
How do I cancel a subscription on my iPhone?
Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. If it isn't in the list, check any other Apple Account you use. With no Apple receipt, another company bills you: cancel with them.
Will I get a refund if I cancel?
It depends on the company. Amazon refunds a Prime period whose benefits you haven't used, Adobe refunds most plans within 14 days, and Google Play refunds in some cases. Most services let you use what you paid for until the period ends.
When should I cancel a free trial?
At least 24 hours before it ends. Apple says so for App Store trials, and OpenAI says the same for ChatGPT's billing date.
What if I'm still charged after cancelling?
Contact the company with your cancellation confirmation. The US Federal Trade Commission advises disputing the charge with your card issuer if it continues.
