The best bill tracker apps, compared

Last checked

Quick answer

The best bill tracker app depends on how your bills get into it. Chronicle, BillOut and Bills Organizer & Reminder are lists you fill in yourself, each with a reminder before the due date. PocketGuard, Bill Tracker Pro and TimelyBills can also link your bank, where their bank provider works, and Rocket Money needs a US bank. Rasid finds bills in your Gmail with no bank login and reminds you three days before each one is due.

Three ways a bill tracker works

You add each bill

You type in the biller, the amount and the due date once, and the app reminds you before each one. Nothing is connected, so it works in any country. It only knows the bills you add, and a bill that changes each month needs the new amount.

The app reads your transactions and spots the payments that repeat. It sees bills you forgot and usually adds a budget. It needs your bank login through a data provider, and works only where that provider covers your bank: PocketGuard in the US, Canada and the UK, TimelyBills' bank sync in the US and Canada, Rocket Money in the US.

It reads your bill emails

The app finds the bills your providers email you and reads the amount and due date from each one, with no bank login. It works with any bank. It cannot see a bill that is never emailed, and reads only the billers it knows.

The apps one by one

Rasid

An iPhone app for subscriptions and household bills. With read-only Gmail it finds bills from the providers it reads, mostly UAE ones such as DEWA, SEWA, du, e& and Empower, and reads the amount and due date. Any other bill you add by hand. It reminds you three days before each one is due and shows how this bill compares with the last.

  • Good for: bills and subscriptions in one list, found for you, with no bank login.
  • Less good for: paying bills, Android, or billers outside its list, which you add by hand. Rasid is our app, in early access on iPhone. More on the Rasid subscription tracker.

Chronicle

A bill organizer for iPhone, iPad and Mac. You enter each bill once and it reminds you to pay, and keeps your payment history with confirmation numbers. Chronicle Pro adds a year-ahead forecast and the amount to set aside for bills that are not monthly.

  • Good for: a careful record of what you paid, on Apple devices.
  • Less good for: Android, or bills found for you.

Bills Organizer & Reminder

An iPhone and iPad list with upcoming and paid bills, a calendar and charts. You can mark a bill paid from the notification and export to CSV.

  • Good for: a free, detailed list you keep yourself.
  • Less good for: finding bills you forgot.

BillOut

A bill reminder for iPhone, iPad and Android with no sign-up details. Its site says it "doesn't ask you to connect to any of your bank feeds". You can share a bill with flatmates or family.

  • Good for: shared household bills, privately.
  • Less good for: more than 7 bills on the free plan.

TimelyBills

A budget planner with bill reminders and family groups, for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. Bank sync is for the US and Canada.

  • Good for: budgets and bills for a family.
  • Less good for: bank sync outside the US and Canada.

Bill Tracker Pro

Bill reminders, budgets and cash flow. It can sync your bank through Plaid and your Apple Card.

  • Good for: bills and budget in one app, with bank sync.
  • Less good for: a simple list: most of it is about budgeting.

PocketGuard

A budgeting app that links your bank and shows bills and what is safe to spend. It connects to banks in the US, Canada and the UK, and can be used without a bank.

  • Good for: budgeting in those three countries.
  • Less good for: bills alone: it is a full budgeting app, paid after a 7-day trial.

Rocket Money

A finance app that links your US bank, finds recurring charges and can negotiate some bills for you.

  • Good for: people in the US who want bills lowered for them.
  • Less good for: anyone outside the US: its help centre says it is only for users in the US with US banks.

How to choose

  • You want bills found for you, with no bank login: Rasid.
  • You live in the UAE: see the best bill manager apps in the UAE, including apps that pay DEWA, du and e& bills.
