Etisalat (e&) price changes: what notice you get
Last checked
Quick answer
e&'s consumer terms say it gives 28 days' notice of an increase to its prices, and during that time you can cancel the affected service without penalty. So a price hike should come with notice, not without warning. When a bill rises with no notice, the cause is usually a service added mid-month, an add-on, roaming charges or an app store purchase. The Bill Explainer in e&'s app lists the line items behind the change.
What e&'s terms say about price increases
e&'s General Terms and Conditions (Consumer) cover price changes in clause 25 (e&, General T&Cs (Consumer)):
- 28 days' notice. e& gives you 28 days' notice of increases to its prices. During that period you can cancel the affected services without penalty, before the increase takes effect (clause 25(e)).
- Other changes. Changes to the agreement other than price changes are published on e&'s digital channels and apply from the date they are published (clause 25(c)).
- Carrying on means accepting. If you keep using the service after a change takes effect, you are treated as having accepted it (clause 25(f)).
If you got a notice and want to leave, the 28 days are the time to decide.
Why an Etisalat bill rises without a price change
A service started part-way through the month
When a service starts mid-cycle, e& charges only for the days you have it. e&'s example: a service at AED 150 a month, started on the 15th, costs AED 5 a day for 15 days, so AED 75 on the next bill (e&, Billing FAQ).
Add-ons and optional services
Charges for add-on services, and for optional products, services or content you subscribe to through your e& service, are charged under their own terms (e&, General T&Cs (Consumer), clauses 15(c) and 15(g)). e&'s terms list ways an add-on can be bought, including online, by SMS, by phone, through eLife TV and in e&'s apps (clause 6(b)).
Roaming
You are charged for incoming and outgoing use while roaming, converted to dirhams. Some charges can take time to appear on a bill, because they depend on what the overseas network claims (clauses 15(i) and 23).
App store purchases
For app store services that e& bills for, such as the Apple App Store and Google Play, the default spending cap is AED 0 a month. You can set a monthly cap up to AED 1,000 yourself, and e& suspends these services when the cap is reached (clause 16(g)). If a cap was set on your account, those purchases can appear on your bill.
Charges you didn't use
e&'s terms say you pay all charges for the service whether or not you use it (clause 15(a)). A plan or add-on you stopped using keeps costing money until you cancel it.
How to see what changed
- Open the Bill Explainer. In e&'s app, go to Payments, then Bill Details, then Bill Explainer, the third tab. It lists the line items behind the change from last month, and you can tap any line for detail. If nothing changed, the tab doesn't show (e&, Billing FAQ).
- Check your email and SMS. e& sends an SMS summary of your bill and the detailed bill by email within the first three days of every month (e&, Billing FAQ).
- Look for a price notice from e& in the weeks before the bill.
- Query it within 45 days. e&'s terms ask you to tell e& about a dispute within 45 days of the bill's date; e& then investigates and tells you what it found. After that, the bill is treated as accepted (e&, General T&Cs (Consumer), clause 15(j)).
e& asks for the full amount before the 15th of every month. It does not charge a late payment fee, but a delay leads to service interruption (e&, Billing FAQ).
See the change before it's due
Rasid is an app that keeps household bills and subscriptions in one place. Add etisalat by hand, or connect Gmail with read-only access so Rasid finds the bills e& emails you. Once Rasid has more than one e& bill, the bill's screen shows recent bills side by side, the average, and how much more or less this bill is than the last. For a bill with a due date, Rasid reminds you three days before, at 10:00.
Rasid does not pay bills and cannot change e&'s prices. You pay e& directly, and only e& can explain or correct a charge.
FAQ
Does Etisalat (e&) raise prices without warning?
e&'s consumer terms say it gives 28 days' notice of increases to its prices. During those 28 days you can cancel the affected service without penalty, before the increase takes effect.
Can I cancel if e& raises my price?
Yes. Under clause 25(e) of e&'s General T&Cs (Consumer), you can cancel the affected service without penalty during the 28-day notice period, before the higher price applies.
Why is my Etisalat bill higher than last month?
Common reasons are a service or add-on that started mid-month, which adds a pro-rata charge, roaming charges, or app store purchases billed by e&. The Bill Explainer in e&'s app, under Payments and Bill Details, lists the line items that changed.
How long do I have to dispute an Etisalat bill?
e&'s terms ask you to raise a dispute within 45 days of the bill's date. e& then investigates and tells you its findings.
Does Etisalat charge a late payment fee?
No. e& says unpaid bills are not charged a late payment fee, but any delay in paying leads to service interruption.
Can Rasid stop an e& price increase?
No. Rasid shows how each e& bill compares with earlier ones and reminds you before it's due. Prices are set by e&, and you pay e& directly.
