Title: Free-trial traps before White Friday in the UAE
Description: Free trials started in the sales renew weeks later. How trial renewals work on Spotify and Apple Music, and how to end a trial in time on Apple or Google.

# Free-trial traps before White Friday in the UAE

By Taimoor Nasir. Published 24 Nov 2026, updated 24 Nov 2026. 4 min read.

## Quick answer

A free trial is a subscription that has not charged you yet. Most turn into a paid plan on their own at the end, so the safest habit is to write down the end date the moment you start, and end the trial a day or two early if you do not want to keep it. White Friday this year is Friday 27 November, and trials started that week will renew in late December, when nobody is thinking about them.

## How a trial turns into a charge

You give a payment method at sign-up. The provider takes nothing today and starts billing when the trial period ends, unless you cancel first. Two UAE examples, read from the providers' own pages today:

- **Spotify** shows Premium Standard as "AED 0 for 1 month, then AED 23.99 per month after", for people who have not tried Premium before. Premium Student shows the same wording at AED 12.99.
- **Apple Music** shows one month free for new subscribers, then AED 23.99 a month for Individual, AED 39.99 for Family and AED 12.99 for Student. Its page says the plan "automatically renews until cancelled". A separate offer gives three months free after activating an eligible device.

We name these as examples of how trials are worded. We do not list White Friday offers here: they change and sit on each provider's own page, so read the terms on the page you sign up on.

## Why the end date is the whole game

The UK government's 2026 response on subscription rules estimates 9.7 million unwanted subscription contracts are active in the UK, and that 3.6 million of them began as a free or discounted trial that rolled over. Its planned rules, expected to start in spring 2027, include reminders before a trial converts. That is the UK, not the UAE, and we have not cited a UAE rule of this kind. It does show how common the pattern is.

A US survey commissioned by Self Financial in March 2026, of 1,272 adults, found that 70% had forgotten to cancel a free trial at some point and ended up on a paid subscription. It is a vendor survey, so read it as a pointer, not a measurement of the UAE.

## End the trial early, on purpose

Apple's support page says to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you do not want it to renew. That is the rule to work to for any trial billed through the App Store, and a good one for the rest.

**On an iPhone.** Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, select the trial and tap the cancel option. If no cancel option appears, or you see an expiry message in red, it is already cancelled.

**On Google Play.** Go to Payments and subscriptions, then Manage subscriptions, select the subscription and tap Cancel subscription. Google's page says that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription, and that after you cancel you keep access for the time you have already paid for. It does not describe what happens at a trial's end, so check the trial's own terms.

**Directly with the provider.** Use the provider's account page. Our [cancellation guide for the UAE](https://rasid.app/guides/cancel-subscriptions-uae) has the steps for the App Store, Google Play, du and e&, and [how to cancel subscriptions](https://rasid.app/guides/how-to-cancel-subscriptions) covers the general case.

Ending early usually loses nothing you were going to keep. If you are unsure whether you want it, a reminder two days before is better than a charge.

## A checklist for any trial

The US Federal Trade Commission's consumer advice for free trials is short and useful anywhere: check the trial length and how to cancel before you sign up, note the cancellation deadline, set a reminder before the trial ends, keep a copy of your cancellation, and review your card statement after cancelling. If a company keeps charging, the FTC says to ask your card company to stop the payments.

Put the end date in two places: a calendar entry and, if you use one, your subscription list.

## The week after White Friday

Trials started on 27 November end between 27 December and the new year. Work back from the end date, not forward from the sign-up. A one-month trial started on 27 November renews around 27 December. A three-month device trial started that week renews in late February.

## How Rasid helps

Rasid reads billing email in Gmail with read-only access. When it finds a trial, it reminds you before the trial ends, three days before by default, and you can move that to the day itself, one day or seven days. The reminder says the exact amount and date, for example "Netflix renews on Monday: AED 49.00 on 20 Oct. You have 3 days to decide." Rasid does not cancel anything for you. You end the trial with the provider, and the card shows how.

If you would rather track trials by hand, add each one with its end date. See [forgotten and duplicate subscriptions](https://rasid.app/guides/forgotten-subscriptions) for how to find the ones already running, and the [salary-day check](https://rasid.app/blog/salary-day-subscription-check) for a monthly habit.
